It was an impressive start for the U13’s on Sunday. Having taken the whole squad down to Portsmouth for our first 13 a side match, it wasn’t long before the boys shook off their early season rust and hit their stride. We tried some new combinations and everyone pulled their weight admirably, the size of the pitch was a wakeup call for some and justification for Owen’s three weeks of boot camp.
Despite the game ending up going in our favour, all credit to Portsmouth who fought to the end! They contested well and were trying to cope with a new influx of boys from US Portsmouth who sadly have no longer got an U13’s squad. The game ended in a comfortable win for Alton, we welcomed a new player in Alex Overton and a first run out for Cayne Sinclair, both of whom played some fantastic rugby and are welcome additions to the squad. We should also mention that after several near misses the biggest cheer of the day came when Archie Dale crossed for his first competitive try, well done Archie, you never give up and deserved it, although in 5 or 6 years’ time when old enough, you owe Alex a drink!
It was nice to get a game under our belts, to play under the new laws and experience a bigger pitch with much more space. If we perform like that all season, we should be in for an exciting and successful campaign.
