In the preliminary round of the Hampshire Cup, the Alton U13 second team came up against a recently merged Tottonians and Ellingham/Ringwood squad. It was a fairly well matched game with both sides playing some good rugby, with the Alton boys showing they can step up and play well as a team, with great support for each other.
The Alton boys really showed their skills by not only getting to the rucks and mauls quickly and in numbers but also winning most of them even though the Tottonians/E&R pack was significantly bigger than ours which did mean that we suffered in scrum.
After about 5 mins T & E/R where able to break through our defence and make the first try, Alton then regrouped and after 15 mins we managed to score 2 tries in relatively quick succession, first by James and second by Fergus. We went into the break 10-5 up. The second half started well matched, but T & E/R managed to level the score. With 4 minutes to play the Alton boys gave a huge push towards the T & E/R line with Hamish finally driving over to score our 3rd try and take Alton into the lead. During the longest 4 mins of the parents lives the Alton boys had to defend their try line and managed to hold up 2 attempts to score, in the last play we won the scrum and kicked the ball into touch to end with a win.
