Alton U14s put on an excellent display of rugby at 'Fortress Anstey' for a convincing 56-0 win over Tottonians.
Alton opened their scoring within the first minute when Matt Salisbury catching a well placed cross-field kick from Greg Carter to score in the corner. Salisbury crossed the white wash a second time soon after following a strong run along the touchline, before running in field to touch down under the posts. Jonny Maddock converted taking the score to 12-0. The forwards then had a chance to show us their strength, with three well worked tries from John Milne, Finlay Hendren and Matt Smoothy, with the last of these three being converted by Josh Law: 29-0. Alton were to score twice more before the half-time, with Matt Salisbury completing his hat-trick with another score in the corner having gathered a Totts clearing kick and Matt Smoothy scoring our seventh and final try of the half after a storming run through the middle, fighting off several Totts players. Josh Law was unlucky to hit the post with his conversion kick, leaving the half-time score at 39-0.
The points were slower to come in the second half. Tottonians fought hard and were unlucky not to come away with any points on the board, but Alton defence held strong. Persistence eventually paid off for the Alton boys with another strong run down the line from Salisbury who then passed back inside to Josh Law for a score under the posts, which he also converted. Another try for Salisbury followed soon after before in the closing minutes of the match an excellent run of backs play gave Matt Hodges his first points of the match and Alton their 10th try. Final score: 56-0.
A very enjoyable game to watch, with Alton U14s deservedly through to the Cup semi-final.
