Alton U15's - Two Wins from Two in the League
By Steve Carter
A spirited team performance against a strong Petersfield side
Alton visited Petersfield for their second league match of the season.
If all Alton thought they had to do was turn up to win this game, they were very much mistaken! Petersfield started quickly, gaining ground over Alton and only poor handling prevented them from getting the first points on the board.
In the end it was Alton who struck first. Quick handling skills from the backs, sent James Richardson clear under the posts. Which he duly converted himself. In almost a carbon copy of his first try, Richardson scored again.
Alton were now playing in their traditional style. Charging runs from the forwards, slick handling from the backs. Josh Law carved the the defence to score a converted try. Another break by Law, supported by Richardson, led to a superb try for Matthew Salisbury. A real team effort with the ball being spread from one side of the field to the other. Richardson grabbed his hat trick before halftime with another similar team try.
Petersfield managed to claw back a try with several close range attempts before finally forcing the ball over Alton’s line.
The second half was a slower affair, with Alton just not quite getting their act together. Either making the wrong decisions or handling skills letting them down. Despite this however, after sustained pressure on the Petersfield line, Matthew Hodges charged over from close range. Converted by Josh Law.
With time running out, Alton sought to gain a 35 point advantage and in the dying seconds, with a pick and go from the back of a scrum, Finlay Hendren went over for Alton’s final try. Again brilliantly converted by Law.
Some great rugby played (by both sides) but a special mention for Eli Brozenich, who only started playing last year and had an amazing game. Alton really showed how close they are as a squad with this spirited performance.
Final score Petersfield 5 - Alton 43
James Richardson x 3
Richardson x 2
Law x 2
