Rain doesn't stop play!
Beautiful weather for the journey down to this friendly game against Portsmouth, who play from Division 2. As the game started the rain stopped, but CHAlton decided not to start playing until Portsmouth were two tries up, score 14-0. Then, they engaged the gears starting with a scrum against them, which duly pushed Portsmouth off the ball. There were then several unsuccessful attempts on the try line by CHAlton until our new player Joe Wheeler found space and scored 14-5.
CHAlton formed a broken defensive line and Portsmouth ran in a try from their own half 21-5. CHAlton were not organised very well defensively, but had two great scrums allowing the ball to be passed out to Will Browne, who running at speed on an angle went straight through - try scored 21-10. Portsmouth replied with two more tries making the half-time score 33-10.
CHAlton then decided to do the same to Portsmouth at the re-start with Joe running down the line, chipping the ball over the defence who then took him out with a late tackle, but Will was in support and scored and converted 33-17.
CHAlton then had a 15 minute period of inspiration playing the type of rugby we know they can play, dominating on scrums, attack and defence. The defensive line did eventually break and Portsmouth added another try 40-17.
CHAlton were not finished and a great move from a turnover scrum saw Will and Lewis interchanging passes for CHAlton's last try 40-22. At no point did the player's heads go down and they kept pushing right to the end. With a bit of work on the defensive line the score line could have been very different. Well done to all the boys.
Man of the match went to new player Joe Wheeler with Will Browne a close second.
