The final was played at the neutral ground of Havant RFC on their new synthetic (AGP) pitch.
The game started evenly and after about 10 minutes the first scrum was awarded to Eastleigh who had some big forwards. CHAlton didn’t disappoint and pushed them off their own scrum,
Michael secured the ball, which was passed through hands to Charlie H who pushed over for a try, duly converted by Lewis 7-0. The teams then had a period of sounding each other out.
Eastleigh pressured to the try line making CHAlton defend and managed to clear their lines. Penalty awarded which Eastleigh converted 7-3. CHAlton responded almost immediately with a driving run from Charlie H who passed out to Joe who the saw an overlap on the wing through hands to Harvey who scored 12-3. Eastleigh then clawed back to 12-6 with another penalty. Eastleigh pressured and a mistake by CHAlton allowed them to score. 12-11.
Half-time and Dave had run out of nails by now! CHAlton came out all guns blazing. They won an Eastleigh line out and the ball was passed out to Joe who did his traditional chip and chase and recovered the ball and scored with Lewis converting 19-11.
CHAlton then put some daylight between themselves and Eastleigh with a great try from a line out through hands to Will duly converted by Lewis 26-11. Instantly CHAlton attacked again adding another converted try by Joe 33-11. Eastleigh were a very physical side but CHAlton matched them with some great work at the breakdown and hard tackling. Eastleigh did manage one more try and then defended really well until the ball came out to George who duly scored with one of his bulldozer runs. Making the score 40-16. All credit to Eastleigh who ran in a final try making the score 40-21. Every player contributed to a great game which they controlled all the way through despite a nervous coach and manager on the sidelines! Worthy winners and a great way to round off the past 2 and half seasons playing together.
Thank you to the CHAlton supporters who certainly made some noise in the stand. The boys finish off a great season and should be very proud. I know the parents and coaches certainly are.
