Credit must go to Stoneham who never gave up during the entire 80 minutes

For this first round Hampshire Plate match Alton RFC entertained Stoneham who are now a Hampshire Two side, Alton RFC are in Hampshire One.
As the score suggests this was a bit of a mis-match although Stoneham never gave up.
Immediately before the kick-off Ed Thomas, skipper for the day, with his mother and sister performed a small ceremony in memory of his father Mike. Mike Thomas was involved with Alton RFC for more than 40 years, as a player, Chairman and Junior Coach, he will be sorely missed.
This must have inspired Ed as within 30 seconds of kick-off he had intercepted a pass in Stoneham’s 22 metre area, to open the scoring, Cameron Hamer added the additional points.
With their young set of backs Alton quickly realised that they could easily outrun the visitors and by half-time led 61-7, nine tries, 8 of which were converted by Hamer.
The second half, with Alton totally dominant, was more of the same with a further 8 tries, 4 of which Hamer converted whilst Ed Thomas grabbed a further, cheeky, 2 points with a drop-kick conversion.
Alton’s 17 tries were scored by Karter Whitlock and Oliver Burden, both of whom grabbed a hat-trick, Ryan Bale, Mike Robson and Kenneth Steel all claimed 2; Ed Thomas, Bren Sumner, Jess Powell, Harry Thomas, and a newcomer, Matt Sellstrom claimed 1, Matt scoring his second try for Alton in his second game.
Alton must now prepare themselves for their first league fixture next Saturday, 8th September when they visit Ventnor, this will be a far harder contest. They will be accompanied by the 2nd XV who will also be playing the home side’s 2nd XV in Hampshire Merit Table 4, kick-off is at 3:00 p.m. on the Isle of Wight.
