On Saturday Alton entertained Alresford, who are now a Hampshire Premier side following a major restructuring of the County’s leagues, Alton are in Hampshire One.
This game was always intended as a practice match for both sides, and Alton took the opportunity to look at a few new players and possible combinations.
The first half was certainly Alton’s with Joe Gwyther bagging a penalty after 10 minutes, followed by newcomer Matt Sellstrom scoring his first try for Alton, Cameron Wicks and Karter Whittock added one each, Gwyther converting both to give the home side a 22-0 lead at halftime.
Alton made personnel changes throughout the second half, regrettably this altered the balance of the game and Alresford took full advantage gaining a penalty try 16 minutes in, followed up by 2 more tries, although these were unconverted. Finally, the visitors won the match with a converted try bang on the final whistle, 22-24.
Alton must now prepare themselves for their first competitive match next Saturday, 1st September when their visitors are Stoneham in the opening round of the Hampshire Plate, kick-off is at 3:00 p.m. in Anstey Park
