Alton dominate in this bottom of the table fixture

This was meant to be Chineham’s home fixture but due to poor pitch conditions at their ground in Basingstoke this match was switched to The Reservation at Bordon, a prudent move where the floodlights proved their worth as there were a few longish injury breaks in the second half.
Chineham and Alton are the 2 bottom clubs in Snow’s Hampshire 2 and a competitive game was expected, however it was a greatly revitalised Alton who dominated this match. Within the first minute of last week’s game against Aldershot and Fleet Alton conceded an interception try. This game began in the same manner, but this time to Alton’s advantage, when winger Fran Williams caught a pass intended for a Chineham player and raced half the length of the park to give standoff Joe Gwyther the easiest of conversions. 6 minutes later second row, Chris Gregory, collected a pass on the 22 metre line and in typical manner bulldozed his way over to touch down below the posts, Gwyther taking the score to 0-14.
Alton, growing in confidence, played an expansive form of rugby which lead to tries at regular intervals; Cameron Wickes on 16 minutes; Fran Williams, a second try on 28 minutes and Alistair Dow on 38 minutes. Gwyther only missed 1 conversion taking the score to 0-33 at half time.
Gwyther helped himself to try 3 minutes into the second half when a Chineham move broke down and he dribbled the ball some 50 metres to give himself an easy conversion, 0-40. On 68 minutes scrum half Ed Thomas scored probably the best try of the afternoon when he broke through from an Alton lineout, evading several tackles to add his name to the score sheet; 0-45.
Despite some determined efforts by Chineham the Alton defence held firm and winger, Ken Steel, who had been heavily involved all afternoon, was rewarded with his own try on 68 minutes, Gwyther converting taking the final score to 0-52; although the official RFU league website incorrectly shows the score as 0-58.
Despite this big win Alton still find themselves 2 points adrift, second to bottom in the league because 3rd from bottom Southsea Nomads had a surprise home win against 2nd placed Locksheath Pumas. Alton’ next fixture is on Saturday 6th January 2018 when they visit Southampton for a league fixture, and will they endeavour to carry on the good work of last weekend.
