Home Bonus Point Victory over 3rd Placed Overton

To keep up their good start to the season Alton needed to demonstrate their intentions to 3rd placed Overton immediately following the opening whistle.
This they did, with a try from prop Nick Stoffel within 2 minutes, followed 8 minutes later by an excellent forwards’ drive over Overton’s goal-line, number 8 Tony Hopkin emerging from below a pile of red & black jerseys.
Good defence by Overton, combined with passing errors by the home side, meant that the crowd had to wait 15 minutes until a slick passing move by the Alton backs, out of their own half, released winger Ryan Bale who accelerated clear to score out on the right. Oli Fielder gained from the very next movement to touch down, Joe Gwyther collecting the extra points. With this 4th try Alton had secured their bonus point and the half-time score of 22-0. HT 22-0
Overton, now playing down Anstey Park’s infamous slope, recovered their poise and began to find their rhythm. However, this was broken when Ryan Bale repeated his flying winger impression on 48 minutes, Gwyther collecting the additional points.
Overton were the next to score on 57 minutes when their forwards forced their way over for an unconverted try, 29-5.
Normality was restored 9 minutes later when Kyle Bale followed his brother’s excellent example to take the score to 34-5.
Alton pursued another try and, on the stroke of full-time, were rewarded when centre Oliver Burden touched down and gave Gwyther an opportunity to gain 2 more points. He accepted, and the final whistle went to give Alton a 41-5 victory. It should be noted that the final score does not reflect Overton’s contribution to a good game of rugby. FT 41-5
The result means that Alton how head the Hampshire 1 league table by 1 clear point, and a points difference of 39 over 2nd placed Farnborough, who, in spite of winning away to Locksheath Pumas, 14-21, failed to earn a try bonus point..
Next Saturday, 10th November, Alton take a rest from league action when they take on Surrey 2 side, Met Police, in the 2nd round of the London & SE Junior Vase. Kick-off is currently scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
