The Alton U14 B team can certainly hold their heads high after this hard fought defeat to a strong London Irish side.
Alton started well, with good work from the forwards and good hands through the backs on more than one occasion, scoring three tries with no reply to take a 15-0 lead. With Alton seemingly in control, London Irish responded with their own run of unanswered tries to take a 20-15 lead.
Alton fought hard and managed to dot the ball down a further 3 times, with one successful conversion, to take their try tally to 6 and put 32 points on the board. Ultimately, however, London Irish's physicality proved too much for Alton, with the Irish finishing the day as 42-32 winners.
They say you learn more from a defeat that a win and there was some good learning for the team today, not least in understanding how physical the game can be. But the boys stood up to it well, did not let their heads drop and pushed Irish hard at times. They should all be very proud of their performances.
